Greenroof Research

Research out of the University of Auckland (especially Dr. Fassman and Dr. Voyde) in partnership with Landcare Research (Dr. Robyn Simcock) has been key to getting the initial greenroofs in New Zealand under way.  (that's Dr. Lea-Cox on one of their test roofs to the left)  They have tackled some huge challenges in locally sourcing a greenroof substrate blend, published some important findings about greenroof evapotranspiration, and prepared numerous reports and guidances to help ensure greenroof and stormwater management success!

One of their most interesting projects we visited was at the Waitakere Civic Center (click link for a picture).  They have had some success with native plants there and are looking into introducing a native skink!

We had perfect weather for a greenroof tour: rain!
Here's me with Will Thorne from Greenroofs New Zealand:

Greenroofs at the botanical garden in Auckland

We toured a number of stormwater management practices at the botanical garden. My favorite greenroof was over this entrance to the children's garden:

New zealand greenroofs!

Thanks to Zoe Zimmerman at Living Roofs we were able to tour some roofs on our study abroad trip.  Here's one with a kiwi on it ;)

happy holidays from the UMD greenroof team!
